German Railways.... I cannot believe it

Our smart white DB ICE train rolled into Brussels right on time and left on the dot of 10.33. As we settled comfortably into our seats we ignored the quietly snoring man in the row behind.

At our first stop in Aachen, a posse of Polizei stormed onto the train and seized the man.  His crime?  No idea but we had our first live Scandi-drama before elevenses!

All was going well until our train announcer (in all 4 languages). announced that our train would be terminating at Duren for some unspecified technical reason, but that a replacement train would arrive.  With some euro shoulder shrugging we all got off at this country station.  Shortly afterwards a similar ICE train arrived heading for Brussels and all their passengers got off too.  They then got on ours, we got on theirs and each train headed back the way it had come.  So we got into Koln just 24 minutes late.

There we had a choice of heading towards Hamburg or Berlin.  The Berlin route looked a little more interesting so we found our fast train and settled back to watch the towns and fields roll by.  Time for a picnic lunch. touching speeds of well over 200km we ate up the miles before coming to an unexpected halt at Hamm.  We sat for sometime and eventually moved off again.  Once again profoundly sorry messages about the lateness of the train, but we had to sit down with our on line timetable and planned our next move from Hannover.   Hamburg or Lunenburg?  Lunenburg won out as it had a slightly longer transfer time for our final leg.

At
Lunenburg we transferred to a local train that rolled more slowly through local villages and towns, some set on the banks of the Elbe, canals or lakes.

We still arrived in Lubeck in the early evening and a 10 minute leg- stretching walk down to our hotel on the island.  Our room has a great view of the spires and turrets of the old town.

We wandered into the city for dinner at a local brewery.  The local Lubeck beer is slightly cloudy Zwickelbier but most welcome.  The food was as German as it gets - schnitzel and Zander and replete, we strolled back to the hotel as the sun set and the moon rose.

No travelling tomorrow apart from Shank's pony as we explore the nooks and crannies of Lubeck.
